The report aims to evaluate S-BAN’s specialized angel investment training on Tanzania’s early-stage investment ecosystem, with the support of the Team Europe Initiative (TEI) “Investing in Young Businesses in Africa” (IYBA). This training is part of the Tanzania Business Angel Investors Accelerator Programme (TAA) which is a larger initiative fostering the Enterprise Support system (ESO), other angel networks and a range of other programmes.
Learning from the S-BAN training program for replication in other nascent ecosystems
The S-BAN training program being assessed is part of a mechanism to establish the foundations for angel investing and is a training program that can be improved, expanded and replicated in other nascent ecosystems based on lessons learned. However, the success over time of S-BAN is clearly an important foundation for TAA Business angel network and ecosystem build up.
In particular, this evaluation will gauge whether and how the training helped prepare participants for real-world investing, including subsequent deal flows, structuring, and broader network effects on the wider investment climate. Through this study we will assess also the replicability of the programme/ training model in other markets.
Selected evaluation criteria to assess results, efficiency, sustainability and external factors
Specifically, the study sought to:
1. Assess the efficiency of the training in preparing participants for angel investing – particularly from the point of view of the cost-benefit of the training:
2. Assess the effectiveness of the training in preparing participants for angel investing, identifying any gaps in knowledge, and suggest potential additional training modules that could enhance the learning experience:
3. Assess the results of the training in preparing participants for angel investing:
4. Assess the sustainability of the training in preparing participants for angel investing, including Assessing the scalability and adaptability of the training model in different regions:
5. Assess the wider investment climate for business angels: Assess systemic enablers and constraints shaping angel investment activity in Tanzania, such as regulatory frameworks, market conditions, and access to co-investment opportunities.
A blueprint approach to establish a locally driven angel investment market
Critical to this report is the understanding that there is no real reference in TZ or point of comparison, in terms of angel investing. The training program of SBAN is working to establish the foundations for an otherwise non-existent Angel investing ecosystem, where a long-term outcome would be comparable to the active ecosystems in more established markets like Kenya, Egypt, Nigeria and South Africa. The program being deployed in Tanzania offers a possible blueprint approach for other nascent ecosystems that seek to establish a locally driven angel investment market. The report provides insights on efficiency, effectiveness, results and sustainability that will guide actionable recommendations for future cohorts. It also includes lessons learned throughout the S-BAN training assessment.
